Positive Behavior Intervention and Support

What is PBIS?

Positive Behavior Intervention and Support (PBIS) is an  approach to teaching and supporting positive behaviors and meeting the needs of ALL students. The focus of PBIS is acknowledging and rewarding students for positive behavior, not just pointing out when a student is doing something wrong. This school-wide approach to discipline focuses on building a safe and positive environment in which all students can learn.

The foundation of PBIS at Dan Mini are the three school-wide expectations:

Be Safe * Be Responsible * Be Respectful

The other components of our PBIS system are the behavior matrix, which explains behavior expectations in each school setting, such as bathrooms, the pavilion, and common areas, direct teaching of the expectations, and “Bear Hugs” to recognize students who are Safe, Responsible and Respectful.

Bear Hugs

Dan Mini teachers and staff acknowledge students ‘caught’ being Safe, Responsible and Respectful with Bear Hugs. Every week, students enter their Bear Hugs into a drawing where they can earn classroom prizes and other rewards!
